Cuberg hires 200th employee

The quickly-expanding advanced battery company, based in Silicon Valley, has passed a notable growth milestone with support from Northvolt.

Cuberg, a fully owned subsidiary of Northvolt, now has a team of two hundred people (and counting). At the time that Northvolt acquired the California-based company in 2021, there were twenty-five employees, which means that Cuberg’s head count has increased by 8X in two years.

Richard Wang, Cuberg’s Founder and CEO, comments: “Growing our team has been an amazing experience. Working alongside our employees at Cuberg has been one of the great privileges of my life, and it is gratifying to see the incredible strength and commitment of the team that we have built.”

“Our company values are purpose, pragmatism, empowerment, integrity, and humility,” Richard continues, “and we absolutely anchor our recruitment program around those ideals. We seek out people who are ready to participate in a collaborative and ambitious organizational culture.”

Today, Cuberg is growing rapidly in order to meet demand from multi-million dollar customer programs. Cuberg battery technology is uniquely suited to serve the high-performance electric mobility markets, and the company is seeking experience in aviation and automotive alongside battery engineering, process engineering, and corporate roles.

Richard continues, “A lot of our people are working in the battery industry for the very first time. Diverse professional backgrounds help our team incorporate fresh ideas and continuously challenge the status quo.”

Northvolt, Cuberg’s parent company, has enabled this growth through steadfast financial support and by transferring excellence from their own world-beating recruitment program. Northvolt has grown to over 5,000 employees since their founding in 2016 and has active operations in Sweden, Poland, Germany, Canada, and here in the United States.

What’s it like to work at an organization growing this quickly? Let’s hear from some “milestone” employees here at Cuberg, starting with the very first.

“I remember there was one day early on where we lost some test data and our whole team was really bummed out. Richard decided he would cheer us up with a motivational speech and personalized coffee mugs – I still have mine! It says 'The Electrolyte Queen' and I use it every day.

Our team used to be so small that we were all within earshot of each other. I remember the day that we needed to expand to two rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs in the old office, and I couldn’t just call out questions over my shoulder anymore. That was when I realized that things were changing and we were on to something big.”

“As the person who pays the bills at Cuberg, I can say that this organization is very focused on only spending on things that matter. That’s a big part of why we’ve made it when so many other startups haven’t. It’s true that we’ve grown a lot, but a few things that haven’t changed are: the kitchen is still the heart of the office, I still like the people I work with, and I still make everyone shop with online coupons!”

“One of the fun things about working at a company growing this fast is that people on the team have lots of opportunities to define their roles and the direction they want to take. Figuring out how to get the most out of the people on the team and setting them up to grow based on their talents and interests is a big part of my own motivation.”

“As the Head of Recruiting, I’ve been on the forefront of this expansion and it’s honestly been thrilling. Our company isn’t just growing in size, it’s also growing in depth, and I see our leaders making thoughtful and nuanced decisions based on the tremendous diversity of ideas that our people bring every day. I’ve also really appreciated hiring for an organization that is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workplace. This is truly a special team of genuinely kind and passionate individuals.”

“I joined Cuberg almost exactly a year ago and we grew from 100 employees to 200 in that incredibly short period. Time goes by fast in this industry! We’ve designed, built, and tested our own module since I started and it’s such a massive accomplishment. I feel a great sense of pride working on the cutting edge of aviation technology.”

“I’ve been here just a few weeks, and I have lots of exploring to do, but it’s already obvious that Cuberg is a place where I can make a big impact quickly. I was looking for a role where I could work with a lot of autonomy and truly ‘own’ my work and that’s what guided me here. I was drawn to battery R&D from the beginning of my undergraduate career because batteries are absolutely the future of energy and I can’t wait to accelerate our technology into the marketplace!”
